Katharine Joo MD

Bio

You may be curious about how unconscious mechanisms have shaped your life. You may have persistent physical symptoms that have not responded to biomedical approaches. You may be dissatisfied or alienated by short term “evidence-based” psychotherapy. You may wonder why unwanted patterns of behavior repeat despite your conscious endeavoring toward health and well-being. You may have been on psychiatric medications for many years and want to explore the possibility of tapering or discontinuation.

I am a psychiatrist, which means that I completed medical school and a four-year psychiatric residency at an accredited hospital. My approach to psychoanalytic treatment is based on Freud and Lacan’s conceptualization of the unconscious. However, there may be times when I briefly utilize a psychotherapeutic or biomedical orientation, which will be based on my clinical assessment of your presentation. We will work together to determine the frequency of sessions and discuss factors that influence the duration of treatment.
